Jazz Combo: Norwell High School

Wednesday, February 126:30—7:30 PMMeeting RoomNorwell Public Library64 South Street, Norwell, MA, 02061

The Norwell High School Jazz Combo is a small group of students who have been involved in the jazz program for multiple years. While some of them got their start in jazz performance as early as Middle School, others started at NHS in our Jazz Workshop or Jazz Ensemble courses. The Combo is modeled on small jazz groups from the 1940s-1960s, and it performs mostly jazz standards from that era. The instrumentation of the Combo changes from year to year as students come and go, but it typically comprises a rhythm section (piano, guitar, bass, drums) and one or more horns. As is common for groups of this type, the Combo arranges all of its repertoire from lead sheets, as opposed to a more traditional big band, where all of the songs are written out in great detail. As a result, the focus of the group is on individual and group decision-making, understanding of jazz forms and styles, and improvisation.
